A court has sentenced a former banker, Mr. Akin, to 15 years imprisonment after he masterminded a daring robbery of the branch where he worked as Head of Operations.
The convict, who served for six years at First Bank of Nigeria, reportedly collaborated with a gang of armed robbers after becoming dissatisfied with his salary and lifestyle.
Investigations revealed that Akin provided the criminals with sensitive operational details about the bank, including security arrangements and the layout of the vault room.
According to security sources, the robbery was carefully executed over a weekend. One of the robbers allegedly entered the bank during Saturday operations and hid inside the ceiling through the restroom area before the premises closed for the day.
Further details obtained by this online newspaper indicate that around 4 a.m. on Sunday, the suspect emerged and opened a hidden exit door, allowing three other gang members to enter the building while the two security guards on duty were asleep.
Using the insider information provided by Akin, the gang accessed the vault and carted away large sums of naira and foreign currencies before escaping through the same route.
The crime was discovered on Monday morning when bank officials found the vault completely empty, prompting an immediate police investigation.
Detectives initially detained the guards on duty and ordered all staff members to remain within the city while investigations continued.
Police subsequently conducted quiet searches of the homes of bank employees, beginning with senior officials.
However, when officers arrived at Akin’s residence, he reportedly resisted the search and attempted to contact his manager—only to learn that other staff homes had already been searched.
A thorough search of his house led to the discovery of large quantities of cash in both naira and foreign currencies, linking him directly to the robbery.
He was immediately arrested and later confessed to orchestrating the operation, providing investigators with details of the robbery gang.
Following trial proceedings, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to 15 years behind bars for his role in the high-profile insider bank robbery.
