A Nigerian social media user, Chukwudi Iwuchukwu has stirred conversations online after claiming that couples do not need millions of naira to have a legally recognised wedding in Nigeria.
According to the post, intending couples can conduct a valid court wedding for less than ₦100,000 through any federal marriage registry, including the popular Ikoyi Federal Marriage Registry.
The writer argued that with about ₦30,000, couples can secure a wedding date at the registry, while an additional ₦20,000 could cover basic photography services often provided by roadside photographers around the venue.
He further suggested that another ₦50,000 could be used to entertain guests and in-laws at a nearby fast-food restaurant after the ceremony.
The post stressed that many Nigerians unnecessarily spend millions on lavish weddings instead of investing the money in more important ventures after marriage.
“Bro! you don’t need ₦20 million for your wedding,” the post read, adding that couples should focus more on building their future together rather than organising extravagant ceremonies.
The opinion has since generated mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians agreeing that expensive weddings have become financially draining, while others insisted that traditional and religious ceremonies remain culturally important.
