Dr Echezona Obiagbaosogu, a former Catholic priest and academic at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has made headlines for his decision to leave the priesthood after 17 years to focus on the promotion of African traditional religion.
Obiagbaosogu, who specialises in African Traditional Religion, recently defended his PhD dissertation titled “Rainmaking and Control in Igbo African Medicine,” which explores the spiritual and cultural significance of rainmaking within Igbo traditions.
Speaking about his journey, Obiagbaosogu shared that his fascination with African spirituality began during his academic pursuits, leading him to study under a renowned native doctor to deepen his understanding of indigenous practices. He described his research as a mission to reclaim Africa’s cultural heritage, which he believes has been suppressed by colonial influences.
“Africa is rich in spiritual resources and wisdom that have been overshadowed for far too long,” he said. “Through this work, I hope to inspire a renewed appreciation for our traditional values.”
