The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has suspended the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Samson Osagie, along with the Chairman of the State Local Government Service Commission, Hon Damian Lawani, over allegations of serious financial misconduct.
The decision, announced in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Musa Ikhili, was said to take immediate effect. According to the statement, the suspension is intended to allow for a thorough investigation into the accusations levelled against the officials.
“They are to remain suspended pending the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement read, adding that the governor has set up an investigative committee to examine the allegations and make recommendations accordingly.
In response, Dr Osagie strongly denied any wrongdoing. In a statement following the announcement, he dismissed the claims as baseless, insisting he was never involved in any financial misconduct.
“I have not and was never engaged in any financial dealings with anyone, nor have I committed any infraction of any kind. I was not confronted with these allegations before my suspension was made public,” he stated.
Hon Damian Lawani, a known loyalist of former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, has also faced accusations of financial recklessness. Sources alleged that he attempted to exploit his position to amass funds within a short period of his appointment.
