Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has expressed strong optimism about the future of the state as it marks its 33rd anniversary.
Speaking at the event “Education: The Pathway to the New Edo Nation,” organized by the State Ministry of Education, Obaseki highlighted Edo’s potential to transform into a prosperous state, reflecting on the significant progress made during his administration.
Celebrating Edo at 33, Obaseki said that the State’s journey has been one of hope and resilience. “Today is a story of hope,” the governor remarked, noting that over the past eight years, his administration has demonstrated that meaningful change is achievable.
He recounted the challenges faced when he took office in 2016, particularly issues like human trafficking and slavery, which have since been effectively addressed.
Obaseki also announced the upcoming unveiling of new master plans for Edo State and Benin City, stressing the importance of strategic planning in securing a bright future for the state.
In her welcome address, the state Commissioner of Education, Joan Oviawe, underscored the significance of integrating the new regional development and Benin City master plans into the education curriculum. She explained that this integration is crucial for equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to drive Edo’s progress and development.
“Through our subjects, we are intentionally reflecting the master plan’s key components, including sustainable urban planning, innovative agriculture, access to clean water, and renewable energy,” Oviawe stated. She highlighted the importance of preparing students to actively contribute to the realization of the New Edo Nation by bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
Further shedding light on the master plan, the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Housing, Urban and Regional Development, Ms. Isoken Omo, explained that the new plans were developed through extensive stakeholder engagement and are designed to be people-centric and data-driven.
She noted that these plans, which will guide the state’s development for the next 30 years, mark a significant departure from previous approaches that lacked comprehensive public involvement.
Omo also expressed regret that Edo had been developing without a master plan since 2012, making the new strategic framework a crucial step forward as the State enters its next chapter at 33.
During the event, there was an interactive session anchored by the Director General of JOOPSA, Precious Imuwahen Ajoonu where selected Commissioners in the State discussed the mandate of their various Ministries and achievements thus far in line with the Edo regional master plan.
