Dr. Azemhe Azena, a televangelist and politician, who was one of the foremost aspirants to the governorship seat of Edo state under the platform of the Labour Party (LP), has resigned from the party. His resignation letter, which was released to the press by his media team, highlighted the reasons for his decision, which has sparked conversations on social and traditional media spaces.
According to the letter, Dr. Azena and his team were denied entry into the Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo State by the leadership of the Labour Party during his tour of the Edo North Senatorial district in December 2020. Despite several entreaties by the senatorial leader, Amb Chris Ighodalo, Dr. Azena and his team were not allowed into the local government area. He wrote a protest letter to the senatorial leadership, copying the State leadership, and also met with the senatorial leader over the issue, but no action was taken.
Dr. Azena expressed his disappointment with the ill-treatment he suffered at the hands of the party’s leadership, which he described as impunity, high-handedness, and disrespect for constituted authority by a single individual. He called on all genuine democrats, especially those of the Labour Party, which professes justice, fairness, and equity as her mantra, to frown upon such acts.
Dr. Azena, who hails from Okpekpe in Etsako-East local government area of Edo state, was one of the earliest aspirants to declare his interest in the governorship seat of the state under the platform of the Labour Party. He has yet to join any political party and is said to be in consultation with his constituents to determine his next line of action. His resignation from the party has been described as a significant loss to the Labour Party, and his next move is eagerly anticipated by political observers in the State.
