Hardship: Gov Alia to Increase Minimum Wage in Benue

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has launched efforts to raise the minimum wage for workers.
Tersoo Kula, the governor’s spokesman, said in a statement on Friday that the governor has already formed a committee to study the current minimum wage and suggest changes to the government.
He stated that the committee, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government and consisting of the Head of Service and numerous heads of MDAs, will work with the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
According to Kula, the state government is not unaware of the economic crisis bedeviling citizens, stressing that the government is doing everything possible to alleviate the suffering.
“The committee has since held its inaugural meeting and will be collaborating with organized labour.
“The government of Benue state is conscious of the economic challenges the nation is experiencing and will do its best to provide its citizens succour in the prevailing circumstances,” the statement added.

In another development, the Benue State House of Assembly on Thursday, refused to endorse one of the nominees of Governor Hyacinth Alia as a member of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), Vincent Gisaor, for allegedly insulting the Tiv tribe in a Facebook post.
