Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000. This announcement followed a meeting with representatives of organized labor in Makurdi, the State capital, on Monday, November 18, 2024.
A statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, confirmed that the new wage structure will take effect from November 2024. Governor Alia emphasised that his administration remains committed to addressing workers’ welfare concerns, including the payment of outstanding salary arrears.
“We decided to set the wage at N75,000, fully aware of the other concerns raised by organised labour during the negotiations,” Alia stated. The governor highlighted that these issues included adjustments to transportation allowances, tax relief, and other incentives to cushion the effects of economic hardship.
In addition to implementing the increased minimum wage, the governor pledged to clear the remaining three months of the five-month salary arrears backlog, as provided for in the 2024 budget. The arrears will be paid alongside the new wage, underscoring the administration’s determination to improve workers’ livelihoods.
Alia’s decision to surpass the federal government’s approved N70,000 wage benchmark reflects his administration’s responsiveness to the unique needs of Benue workers. “Our motivation is to alleviate the hardships faced by our workforce and ensure they are adequately taken care of,” he affirmed.
