The 2024 Justice Reform Teams (JRTs) Conference has officially commenced, drawing together key representatives from Nigeria’s criminal justice system. Organised under the EU-funded Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC II) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Justice (FMoJ), the three-day event seeks to address systemic challenges and propose new strategies for justice delivery in Nigeria.
The conference, held in Ilorin, features participants from Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committees (ACJMCs) across the nation.
The gathering aims to foster collaboration among criminal justice institutions while promoting innovative reforms that enhance accountability and efficiency in the justice sector.
In a statement, Murkthar Suleiman, Communications Officer for RoLAC II, emphasized the significance of the event. “This platform provides an opportunity to review reforms, share experiences, and strategize on overcoming emerging challenges in justice coordination. Our goal is to further improve justice delivery and access across Nigeria,” he said.
Key achievements highlighted by RoLAC include the adoption of the Administration of Criminal Justice Laws in all 36 states, the establishment of zonal JRT networks, and the initiation of inspection visits to detention facilities by magistrates. These reforms have significantly bolstered the efficiency of justice systems nationwide.
This year’s conference will focus on tackling obstacles to effective reform implementation, strengthening institutional coordination, and exploring innovative approaches to advancing justice delivery.
Special attention will also be given to improving access to justice for vulnerable groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities, and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
Funded by the European Union, RoLAC II aims to consolidate rule of law and anti-corruption reforms in Nigeria. It seeks to enhance the criminal justice system’s quality and oversight while fostering transparency and accountability in governance.
