Healthcare: FG commissions Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital Extension

Federal Government on Thursday commissioned the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital annex at South-Ibie in Etsako West Local Government of Edo State.

The medical facility is to cater for the general health needs of the locals especially patients seeking gynecology services.


Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Medical Director, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Professor Sylvanus Okogbenin said that the commisioning of the medical facility is in line with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s vision of bringing healthcare closer to the people as a cornerstone of human capital development.

“I am very happy to welcome you all to this inauguration, launching and opening of this Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital annex.

“The Honourable Minister of Health has always told us- the Chief Medical Directors to assist the communities that are both close and distance from our main hospital to acquire their annexes and develop healthcare facilities in such communities.”

While congratulating the people of South-Ibie community on the successful takeoff of the facility, he assured that the management of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital is committed to ensuring that the annex stands and provides quality healthcare to the community and beyond.

He said that the annex has been provided with adequate medical personnels and facilities to carry out medical services adding that specialist medical experts will visit the annex from time to time until they can be deployed permanently to the facility.

He lauded the effort of the monarch of South-Ibie Kingdom who facilitated the establishment of the medical facility to the community adding that, it is a project that would have positive impact on generation yet unborn.

While calling on the doctors and nurses posted to the medical facility to take their job seriously, he charged residents of the community to support, nurture the project in order to ensure that health service of world standard comes to South-Ibie community.

The CMD said: “You must take your work very seriously. You are the hope of South-Ibie Kingdom. You are the ambassador of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital here. So, you must take the job very seriously. We put a lot of confidence in you. You must do the job the way it will bring good health to the people of South-Ibie community.” He furthered.


Earlier in his remark, the Aidonojie of South-Ibie Kingdom, Oba Idanesi II, His Highness, Kelvin Aliyu Danesi thanked Professor Sylvanus Okogbeni for his support to the establishment of the medical facility.

He disclosed that the ISTH annex has four senior medical doctors and over twenty nurses that will cater for health needs of the people. He said that the community is already working on approved site to be used as permanent site for the hospital in the near future.

The monarch said: “We have a dream for this hospital. This is just a temporary site. We have already earmarked four hectares of land to build a permanent site for this hospital. We would not only build but also make provision for staff quarters to cater for the accommodation needs of staff to be deployed to work at the hospital.”
