South Africa’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign came to a heart-breaking end on Sunday night after a narrow 2–1 defeat to Cameroon dumped Bafana Bafana out of AFCON 2025 at the Round of 16 stage.
The loss at the Al Medina Stadium left South Africa’s players crestfallen, bringing to a close hopes of a deep run at the continental showpiece and sending the team home earlier than supporters had anticipated.
Cameroon struck first in the 34th minute when Junior Tchamadeu pounced on a loose clearance, calmly slotting home to give the Indomitable Lions the lead. The advantage was doubled shortly after the restart as teenage forward Christian Kofane rose highest to power in a header, putting Cameroon firmly in control.
Bafana Bafana refused to fold and mounted a late rally, with substitute Evidence Makgopa reducing the deficit in the 87th minute to ignite hopes of a dramatic comeback. South Africa piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but despite a tense finale, the equaliser proved elusive.
The victory sends Cameroon through to the quarter-finals, where they will face Morocco in a high-stakes showdown.
Despite the disappointment, South Africa head coach Hugo Broos struck a measured tone after the match, insisting his side did not deserve to lose and refusing to lay blame at his players’ feet.
“I think we dominated the first half and had three clear chances to score,” the Belgian said. “If we had converted those opportunities, I believe we could have come out victorious. I won’t say our players didn’t play well—they did a fantastic job—but luck wasn’t on our side.
“But that’s the way life is. Our team did not deserve to lose tonight; this is not the result we came for, but we have to acknowledge that it is what it is.”
Broos added that the focus would now shift to future objectives, with qualification for the World Cup top of the agenda.
“We will now focus on preparing for our future objectives, with the World Cup in our sights,” he said.
