The Nigerian House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into Rep. Alexander Ikwechegh (APGA-Abia) following allegations that he assaulted a commercial Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya.
This decision came after a motion raised by the House Majority Leader, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere, was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The controversy began when a video, allegedly showing Rep. Ikwechegh in a heated confrontation with the driver, went viral on Sunday evening. In the recording, Ikwechegh is seen using derogatory language and reportedly engaging in physical aggression, which has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability.
Addressing the matter, Ihonvbere expressed concern over the impact of the incident on the reputation of the House, noting that he received numerous calls from distressed citizens demanding answers.
“This conduct is damaging to the institution we represent,” Ihonvbere stated.
Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Rep. Babajimi Benson (APC-Lagos), emphasized the need for lawmakers to set an example in their conduct, urging them to remember their responsibility to serve rather than exploit their status.
In response to the outcry, Rep. Ikwechegh has issued a formal apology to both the House and the victim, expressing deep regret for his actions.
“What began as a misunderstanding escalated into actions and words I deeply regret,” Ikwechegh said. “I sincerely apologize to Mr. Abuwatseya, his family, and the public. As a representative of the people, I am accountable for my behavior and the impact it has on those around me.”
Ikwechegh revealed that he has sought alternative dispute resolution with Abuwatseya and reached a mutual agreement to address the matter constructively.
Despite mounting public calls for his immediate suspension, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu clarified that due process must be followed before disciplinary action can be taken.
The case has now been referred to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for a comprehensive investigation.
