Popular Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye has declared he is “not afraid” and will not be intimidated following a controversial remark by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike that drew nationwide backlash.
The storm erupted after Wike reportedly said he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” the journalist over comments warning that a one-party system could endanger Nigeria’s democracy.
The statement triggered sharp criticism across the country, with Amnesty International condemning the comment as “reckless and violent language.”
Reacting on Sunday, Okinbaloye stood his ground, stressing that such rhetoric has no place in a democratic society.
“The fact remains that our democracy is in danger if we allow one-way traffic in balloting,” he said, noting that his concerns were directed at all Nigerians, not just political actors.
He further disclosed that Wike had reached out to him privately following the backlash, clarifying that his comments were not intended in the manner they were perceived.
While acknowledging the minister’s call, the broadcaster maintained that threats—real or implied—are unacceptable in any democratic setting.
“Let me be clear: I am not afraid and I will never be intimidated,” Okinbaloye said firmly. “We may disagree and as humans we may err, but dissent must never descend into hostility or harm.”
Reaffirming his commitment to journalism, he added that he would continue asking tough questions and holding those in power accountable.
