Former Edo State Football Association Chairman and ex-Lagos State Chapter Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Frank Ilaboya, has commended Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on his election as the 1st Vice President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) B Zone.
The election took place during the CAF African Schools Football Championship WAFU B qualifying tournament in Niamey, Niger Republic. It saw key appointments, including Ghana Football Association President Kurt Edwin-Simeon Okraku as WAFU B President and Burkinabe Football Federation President Oumarou Sawadogo as 2nd Vice President.
In his statement, Ilaboya described Gusau’s elevation as a major milestone for Nigerian and West African football, underscoring its significance in regional football development.
“This achievement is a reflection of Gusau’s unrelenting commitment to the growth of football in Nigeria and beyond,” Ilaboya said. “It is a proud moment for us all and highlights Nigeria’s continued leadership in football administration across the continent.”
Ilaboya also expressed optimism about Gusau’s ability to deliver in his new role. “I am confident that his vast experience and proven track record in football administration will greatly enhance the progress of WAFU B,” he added.
The WAFU B Zone, comprising Nigeria, Togo, Benin Republic, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Niger Republic, and Côte d’Ivoire, plays a pivotal role in football development in West Africa.
Gusau, who became NFF President in September 2023, has a distinguished career in African football, including serving on the Organizing Committee for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and working as a senior Security Officer for both FIFA and CAF.
Ilaboya concluded his message with a call for collective support, urging stakeholders in Nigerian football to rally behind Gusau in his new continental assignment.
