The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially submitted the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used in the September 21st, 2024, Edo State governorship election to the Governorship Election Tribunal.
This follows a court order obtained by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had previously sought the release of the machines after INEC declined to hand them over voluntarily.
The move came during Thursday’s tribunal proceedings, where a PDP witness from Akoko Edo took the stand. The witness, who served as the Ward 9 collation agent, revealed discrepancies between the results compiled at the ward level and those posted on INEC’s Result Viewing Portal (IREV).
According to his testimony, while elections were conducted properly in the ward’s 13 polling units, the official results at the collation centre appeared to be a duplicate set, differing significantly from the polling unit records. This prompted the witness to refuse signing the ward collation result sheet.
In a separate statement, another PDP collation agent from Oredo Local Government presented evidence that the results announced by INEC in Ward 1 did not match any of the polling unit data or the information uploaded on IREV.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner of the election after securing the highest number of votes. However, the PDP, dissatisfied with the outcome, has initiated legal action to challenge the election results.
