In a scathing critique, Mr. John Mayaki, a prominent advocate for accessible education, has publicly condemned the decision to impose hefty one million Naira bench fees on Ambrose Alli University medical students, Ekpoma, Edo State.
The announcement, endorsed by the Association of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine, Prof. GBS Iyalomhe has raised concerns about the financial burden it places on aspiring medical professionals.

“Education should be a pathway to empowerment, not a barrier. The government and educational institutions must explore alternative solutions to funding medical education without placing an overwhelming burden on students and their families,” he asserted.
The Special Intervention Team’s recommendation, encouraging the College Management to swiftly implement the bench fees, has triggered concerns among students and parents alike. Mayaki urged all stakeholders to reconsider the decision, suggesting that a collaborative approach be adopted to address the challenges faced by medical colleges.
According to Mayaki, “Instead of burdening students with such a massive financial load, let us come together to find sustainable solutions. This could involve seeking partnerships with the private sector or exploring government grants for medical institutions. We must prioritize the aspirations of these young minds and the nation’s future over short-term financial gains,” Mayaki urged.
