Lokoja– The Kogi State Government has confirmed two cases of cholera within the state, urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspected cases to health authorities.
This announcement was made by the Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Abdullazeez Adam.
“One of the victims has been treated and discharged, while the second patient is still undergoing treatment,” stated Commissioner Adam. He emphasized the critical role of proper reporting and laboratory testing in accurately determining the scope of the cholera outbreak. “As far as Kogi is concerned, we have only two cases of cholera. Until people report it, samples taken for test and confirmation obtained by undergoing culture in the laboratory, we may not know the other cases,” Adam added.
The commissioner highlighted that unreported cases, where individuals self-medicate at home, cannot be officially counted. This underreporting can hinder efforts to effectively manage and contain the disease.
In response to the situation, the Kogi State Government has deployed disease surveillance and notification officers across all 21 local government areas. To further raise awareness and promote good hygiene practices, the government is utilizing radio and television jingles, as well as distributing informative handbills in local languages.
Commissioner Adam appealed to the public to report any suspected cholera cases and adhere to strict hygiene standards to prevent further spread of the disease. The government’s proactive measures aim to curb the outbreak and protect the health of the state’s residents.
The public is encouraged to cooperate with health officials and participate in efforts to maintain community health and safety.
