Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party (LP) has officially declared Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as its presidential candidate, effectively sidelining former flagbearer, Peter Obi.
The announcement followed a meeting of the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) held in Abuja on Monday. The gathering, chaired by LP National Chairman Julius Abure, brought together members of the National Working Committee (NWC), state chairmen, and other high-ranking stakeholders.
According to a communiqué issued after the meeting, the party affirmed its full support for Baba-Ahmed, who served as the party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, describing him as a “credible, consistent and uncompromising advocate for equity and justice.”
The party made no mention of Mr Obi in its resolutions, effectively drawing a line under his association with the LP, despite the former Anambra governor being widely seen as the face of the party in the last general elections.
Insiders say the decision follows months of internal wrangling and Obi’s perceived political disengagement from party activities since the 2023 elections.
The NEC also used the occasion to denounce what it described as an illegal attempt by a rival faction to establish an “Interim National Working Committee.” The party insisted such a move was unconstitutional, null, and void, warning those involved to desist or face disciplinary measures.
“This is a desperate act by political profiteers who do not mean well for the party,” a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary read. “The Labour Party remains united and focused, and we are moving ahead with clear direction and purpose towards 2027.”
With this development, Senator Baba-Ahmed is expected to lead the party’s preparations as it begins early mobilisation for the next election cycle.
The Labour Party’s decision is likely to deepen the cracks within its ranks, especially among supporters of Peter Obi, whose massive youth-driven movement gave the party unprecedented momentum in 2023.
As of press time, Mr Obi has not issued any formal response to the development.
