A 53-year-old Lagos resident, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse in a drainage channel during rainfall.
Monday was arrested in the Meiran area of Lagos on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was caught disposing of refuse in a drainage channel while it was raining.
She was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence.
The court convicted her and sentenced her to one month in prison.
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in a statement, warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
The Authority stressed that such acts constitute environmental offences and attract sanctions under the law.
LAWMA said it would continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.
The Authority also urged residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices, warning that blocking drainage channels with refuse can worsen flooding and pose serious environmental risks.
