The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is set to honour the late Mr Bankole Balogun, the trailblazing first General Manager of the former Bendel Broadcasting Service (BBS), with a posthumous award in recognition of his exceptional contributions to journalism and broadcasting in Nigeria.
In a joint statement issued by the Council’s chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, and secretary, Mr Andy Egbon, the late Mr Balogun was hailed as a broadcaster who played a vital role in shaping the profession through his pioneering work at BBS. According to the NUJ, his unwavering commitment to news gathering and dissemination remains a benchmark in the annals of Nigerian journalism.
The statement highlighted Mr Balogun’s passion for investigative reporting and his dedication to promoting journalistic excellence during his tenure, noting that he invested both time and energy in developing high-quality programming and mentoring young reporters.
Representing the Balogun family at the award ceremony will be his son, Barrister Oladele Bankole Balogun, who currently serves as the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service. The family hails from Igarra, in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
The event is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, 11th May 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre in Benin City. Dignitaries from the Edo State Government and prominent journalists from various media houses across the state are expected to attend the ceremony, which aims to celebrate the legacy of a man many regard as a cornerstone of modern broadcasting.
