A 30-year-old man, Abdullahi Mohammed, who recently made headlines for climbing a 33-kilovolt high-tension electricity pole in Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa, demanding the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been admitted to Yola Psychiatric Hospital for mental evaluation.
The incident occurred on Friday morning, September 27, when Mohammed, a resident of Taraba State, ascended the high-tension pole along the Yola-Jalingo highway, declaring he would not descend until President Tinubu vacated the presidential villa.
His actions immediately drew attention, and he remained atop the pole until the night of Saturday, September 28.
In a bid to ensure his safety, the Adamawa State Police Command enlisted the help of local residents, who eventually persuaded Mohammed to come down. He was promptly arrested.
Speaking to Arewa Punch, the spokesperson for the Adamawa Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, revealed that the man is undergoing psychiatric tests at a facility within the specialist hospital in Yola.
Nguroje also disclosed that Mohammed was found in possession of various hard drugs, including green leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
“When the police from the Mayo-Belwa division rescued Abdullahi Mohammed from the 33kv high tension electricity pole, some hard drugs were discovered on him, including green leaves which he confessed to be Indian hemp,” Nguroje said.
He added, “The suspect further confessed during his interaction with the police that he takes Indian hemp and other hard drugs. He was behaving abnormally, so we had to take him to the psychiatric hospital for a detailed medical examination. We are still waiting for the medical result before we can take the next action.”
Nguroje also indicated that Mohammed’s actions were considered suicidal, and attempting suicide is a criminal offense under Nigerian law. The police plan to charge him accordingly.
“You know attempting to commit suicide is a criminal offense under our Constitution, so we are going to charge him to court,” the police spokesperson concluded.
