Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has issued an apology for a previous sermon in which he claimed that those who do not pay tithes will not make it to heaven.
In a trending video on X (formerly Twitter), Pastor Adeboye expressed regret for misleading his congregation and clarified that the Bible does not support this doctrine.
The respected cleric explained that, much like in school, where beginners are taught foundational concepts such as “light travels in a straight line” before learning more advanced principles like light traveling as a wave, his previous message was an oversimplification meant to encourage Christians.
However, he acknowledged that the statement was inaccurate and did not align with biblical teachings.
“I am sorry for my sermons saying that failing to pay tithing would keep one from entering heaven,” Pastor Adeboye stated.
“The Bible does not contain this statement; rather, it emphasizes that holiness and peace with all people are prerequisites for seeing God.”
The public response to Adeboye’s apology has been largely positive, with many Nigerians praising the pastor for his humility in addressing the error.
Social media users celebrated his transparency, especially given his stature as one of Nigeria’s most influential religious leaders.
