Tension gripped residents of Auchi in Edo State following the killing of a man identified as “Odogwu” in the early hours of Monday. The incident, which occurred at about 2am near his store area, has left the community shocked, calling for swift police intervention.
Odogwu, believed to be a member of the Vikings confraternity, was reportedly from Imo State. However, local sources claim he was not actively involved in cult activities within the Auchi area and kept a low profile. His affiliation with the group is said to be from his past, and he was not known to associate with other confraternity members locally.
Crucially, there was no indication of a recent cult clash in the area prior to the killing, and no cult group has claimed responsibility for the attack. This has led to growing speculation within the community that the murder may have been personally or commercially motivated rather than linked to any confraternity conflict.
A community member, who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, said: “It’s a disturbing development. Odogwu wasn’t known to cause trouble here. People think this might be due to a business issue or a personal disagreement. Whatever it is, we need the authorities to act fast.”
Naija confra reports that, the killing has raised concerns about the general security situation in Auchi, a town that has previously experienced sporadic episodes of cult-related violence. However, residents insist this latest incident seems to stand apart from the usual patterns of gang-related reprisals.
The community has called on the Edo State Police Command to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding Odogwu’s death and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“We call on the hardworking officers of the Edo State Police to dig deep and arrest those behind this act. The people of Auchi deserve to feel safe,” another resident said.
At the time of this report, the Edo State Police had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, residents have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
