Many Feared Dead as Helicopter Reportedly Crashes Into River in Ondo

Several people are feared dead after a helicopter reportedly crashed into a river in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, in the coastal community, with the number of people aboard the aircraft yet to be confirmed.

The condition of possible survivors also remained unclear as emergency and security authorities commenced efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and determine the extent of casualties.

A source familiar with the incident said efforts were ongoing to locate the aircraft and ascertain the identities and number of people who may have been onboard.

Confirming that the authorities were aware of the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, told newsmen that a statement would be issued.

Igbokoda is a major riverine community and commercial hub in Ilaje, one of Ondo State’s oil-producing areas. Helicopters are frequently used in the area for logistics and other operations connected to the oil and gas industry.

As of the time of filing this report, details about the aircraft, its operator, the number of occupants and possible casualties had yet to be officially confirmed.
