The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has announced a nationwide tribute to Lionel Messi, ordering domestic matches across the country to stop in the 10th minute this weekend for a one-minute standing ovation celebrating the superstar’s extraordinary international career.
The tribute will be observed across all men’s and women’s divisions and disciplines, in honour of Messi following his decision to retire from international football after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
“For the upcoming matchday across all men’s and women’s divisions and disciplines, matches will be paused in the 10th minute of the first half for a minute of applause in recognition of Lionel Messi’s career with the Argentina national team,” the AFA announced.
The football body has also instructed stadiums equipped with video screens to broadcast a special tribute montage before kick-off. The video will subsequently be shared across the AFA’s social media platforms.
Messi’s Argentina legacy is monumental.
Since making his senior debut in 2005, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has become Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 125 international goals. He represented the country at six World Cups and finally delivered the ultimate prize in 2022, leading Argentina to its first World Cup triumph in 36 years.
He also holds the World Cup records for most appearances (34) and most victories (23).
Announcing his international retirement, Messi said the decision was painful but inevitable.
