The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has announced the disbursement of ₦5.3 billion to State Pilgrims Welfare Boards, Agencies, and licensed tour operators as refunds for substandard services rendered during the 2023 Hajj.
This development follows widespread complaints from Nigerian pilgrims about deficiencies in accommodation, transportation, and other essential services during the annual pilgrimage. The refund, NAHCON stated, is aimed at addressing these grievances and ensuring accountability among service providers.
According to NAHCON’s spokesperson, the commission collaborated with Saudi-based service providers to recover payments for services that fell short of contractual agreements. The reimbursed funds have been distributed to state boards and operators, who are expected to pass them on to affected pilgrims.
“This refund is part of our commitment to upholding the rights of pilgrims and ensuring they receive value for their money. It also serves as a message to all service providers that substandard performance will not be tolerated,” the spokesperson said.
State welfare boards and tour operators have been directed to prioritise transparency in redistributing the funds. NAHCON further assured that measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence of such issues during future Hajj operations.
The 2023 Hajj faced numerous logistical challenges, partly attributed to increased global pilgrim attendance following the COVID-19 pandemic. With this refund, NAHCON aims to restore public confidence in the management of Hajj operations while improving preparations for 2024.
