Oluyede Confirmed as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff After Rigorous Screening

The House of Representatives has officially confirmed Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede as Nigeria’s substantive Chief of Army Staff. This decision, reached during Thursday’s plenary session, comes after a thorough screening process by the Joint Committees on Defence and Army.

The screening, conducted on Wednesday, was spearheaded by Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence. Presenting the committee’s findings, Benson highlighted Oluyede’s qualifications, experience, and strategic vision for the Nigerian Army, urging lawmakers to grant him full confirmation.

“We carefully reviewed his CV and engaged him on critical issues, including inter-agency collaboration, civilian-military relations, and counter-insurgency strategies,” Benson stated during the session presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. “General Oluyede demonstrated exceptional competence, experience in war zones, and a clear plan to address Nigeria’s security challenges.”

The report submitted by the committee underscored Oluyede’s expertise in tackling terrorism, insurgency, and banditry, as well as his commitment to the welfare of soldiers and the modernization of military equipment. Additionally, Oluyede pledged to ensure transparency and accountability in managing public resources allocated to the military.

Addressing the House, Benson reiterated the nominee’s readiness to lead, noting that his vast experience in negotiation and conflict resolution would play a critical role in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. “He assured the committee of his dedication to strengthening military discipline, training, and recruitment processes while fostering improved media relations,” Benson added.
