X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced a new program that aims to reduce spam, manipulation of the platform, and bot activity.
The program requires new and unverified users to pay a $1 annual subscription fee to sign up. The purpose of this program is to reduce the number of fake accounts and to ensure that genuine users have a better experience on the platform.
The new program is currently being tested in New Zealand and the Philippines. During this test, new accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription fee to be able to post and interact with other users.
Existing users are not affected by this test. According to X, the subscription fee is a small amount that will help to reduce bot activity and spam on the platform. Elon Musk, X’s chairman, tweeted that the charge will make it 1000X harder to manipulate the platform.
He also explained that the fee is the only way to fight bots without blocking real users. X has been successful in reducing spam and bot activity on the platform using various methods. However, the new program is expected to be more effective in reducing spam and fake accounts. The subscription fee is a small price to pay for a better user experience on the platform.
