Niger Delta Brigade Urges Edo Assembly to Prioritise People’s Interests Amid Controversy Over Governor Obaseki’s Alleged Leave Application

The Niger Delta Brigade, a prominent Ijaw socio-political organisation, has issued a stern warning to the Edo State House of Assembly not to overlook the interests of the people as they prepare to resume plenary sessions.

The group called on lawmakers to act with integrity and resist being manipulated by outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki in the final days of his administration.

Speaking in Benin City during an extraordinary meeting, the group’s spokesperson, Mr. Binabi Zoukouma, expressed concerns about the political atmosphere in the state.

Addressing the press, Zoukouma emphasised that Edo citizens, along with the Niger Delta Brigade, are closely monitoring the House of Assembly’s actions, warning them not to collaborate in any potential schemes that could disrupt governance and stability.

Responding to reports of Governor Obaseki’s alleged request for a leave of absence in the final weeks of his term, the group advised the Assembly to deny such a request.

Zoukouma cautioned that approving the leave would be seen as the legislature acting against the will of the people.
“The House must stand with the people and ensure a smooth transition to the incoming government,” he said, adding that any move contrary to this would be “resisted by the people.”

The group criticised Obaseki’s decision to seek leave at a crucial time when he should be facilitating a smooth transition process.

“The Governor should be focusing on setting up a transition committee and accounting for his time in office, not planning to exit the state at the eleventh hour,” Zoukouma stated.

There have been rumours that the governor may be plotting to engage in last-minute financial misconduct, with allegations suggesting plans to launder money before leaving office.

“We urge the House of Assembly to be wary of this scheme. The era of impunity is over,” Zoukouma continued, warning the Assembly of the serious consequences of any actions that go against the public’s interest.

The Niger Delta Brigade also questioned Obaseki’s integrity, noting that his last-minute leave request raises suspicions.
The group called on the Governor to remain in Edo and ensure a transparent and accountable handover to the incoming administration.

“If he has nothing to hide, there’s no reason for this leave application. The people are watching,” Zoukouma added.
