Nigerian Footballer Collapses, Dies during football match

A 29-year-old footballer, Adeyemi Adewale, tragically passed away after collapsing on the pitch during the final of the Adeleke Memorial Cup in Osogbo, Osun State, on Thursday, 16th January 2025.

Adewale, a player for the Ilesa West Football Team, was participating in the highly anticipated match at the Ataoja School of Science when the incident occurred. Eyewitnesses reported that he suddenly collapsed during the game, prompting an immediate response from those on site. The young footballer was quickly rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital for medical attention, but unfortunately, he was confirmed dead shortly after arriving.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, who stated:

“On 16th January 2025, while the Adeleke Memorial Cup final was ongoing at Ataoja School of Science, one Adeyemi Adewale, aged 29, a player for Ilesa West Football Team, slumped during the match. He was rushed to Osun State University Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by medical staff. His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue.”

The annual tournament, which honours the late Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, the first Executive Governor of Osun State and elder brother of the current governor, Ademola Adeleke, has been held in his memory since his untimely death in April 2017.
