NOA Launches National Campaign for Free Birth Registration and NIN Allocation for Children Aged 0–5

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has rolled out a nationwide campaign aimed at ensuring that every child in Nigeria has a registered birth certificate and access to a National Identification Number (NIN), a move designed to increase access to critical services like education, healthcare, and social protection.

The campaign, in partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC) and UNICEF, will focus on registering children aged 0–5 years free of charge, according to the NOA Director General, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu.

Represented by David Akoji, Director of Special Duties and States Operations, Issa-Onilu emphasized that birth registration is the first legal acknowledgment of a child’s existence, providing them with protection and access to essential services that are fundamental for their growth and development.

“Birth registration is more than just paperwork. It is a fundamental right and a safeguard for every child against abuse, exploitation, and even statelessness,” he stated.

“It forms the foundation for each child’s access to services and legal recognition in Nigeria. Through this nationwide social mobilisation drive, we aim to encourage all parents and guardians to make use of this opportunity to secure their children’s future.”

The initiative, which began in August and will run until November 2024, urges parents to visit the nearest NPC registration centers.
The process is free and simple, requiring only basic documentation such as an immunization card or an existing birth certificate. The NOA has ensured that every child who completes the process will receive a NIN after face capturing and birth registration.

Issa-Onilu underscored the significance of accurate birth registration for national planning and development, citing its importance for gathering essential data needed in public services, including education and healthcare.
“By registering a child’s birth, families enable their inclusion in state recognition and future protections,” he added.

NOA is calling on community leaders, parents, and guardians to actively support this initiative to provide each child in Nigeria a strong start in life, secured by their right to an official identity and access to vital resources.
