Football fans within and outside Benin City on Saturday, 6th January 2024, witnessed an exciting match between Bendel Insurance FC and Rangers International FC of Enugu in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 17.
The match, which was held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, ended with Bendel Insurance FC emerging as the clear winner with a score of 2-0.
The first half of the match saw Junior Osaghae of Bendel Insurance FC score the first goal in the 41st minute, giving his team an early lead. The second half was equally intense, with both teams putting in their best efforts to score.
However, it was Bendel Insurance FC who once again struck in the 86th minute, securing their victory and earning three points.
This win has propelled Bendel Insurance FC to the fourth position on the league table with 27 points after 17 games, while Rangers International FC now holds the ninth position with 22 points in 16 games.
The victory has also enabled Bendel Insurance FC to claim the #2.5 million prize pledged by Afrinvest West Africa for the winning team of the match. On the other hand, Rangers International FC received the loser prize of #500,000.
Afrinvest West Africa, the financial institution that pledged the cash prizes, had earlier announced that in case of a draw, each team would receive #1 million, deposited into Optimus by Afrinvest personal accounts of players and club officials of both teams.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State council, Comrade Ambassador Festus Alenkhe presented cash award to the Most Valuable Player of the match, Junior Osaghae for his brilliant performance.
