The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has distanced itself from a proposed N200 mobilisation levy being championed by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), making it clear that the scheme is not an NYSC initiative.
The development followed a proposal announced by NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, who said the student body was considering a system requiring students to pay an annual N200 due.
Babatunde disclosed the proposal in a Facebook post on Saturday, explaining that the levy was being considered in connection with the mobilisation of prospective National Youth Service Corps members.
However, the NYSC has moved to dissociate itself from the proposed payment, signalling that prospective corps members should not regard the levy as an official NYSC charge.
The controversy comes amid growing scrutiny of additional financial demands placed on Nigerian students, particularly as many young graduates already face significant costs associated with their transition into the mandatory national service programme.
The NYSC’s position effectively places the proposed N200 levy outside the scheme’s official financial framework and raises questions over the authority of any body seeking to impose such a payment on prospective corps members.
