The political tension in Edo State escalated on Monday as security was heightened around the Edo State Government House on Osadebey Avenue, amid speculations that Comrade Philip Shaibu, the State’s embattled deputy governor, was attempting to resume his duties.
This development follows the removal of Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly after a publicised falling out with Governor Godwin Obaseki. Shaibu, however, challenged his dismissal in court, accusing the assembly members of failing to provide him with a fair hearing.
In a dramatic twist, Justice J. K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that Shaibu’s removal was unconstitutional and ordered his reinstatement. Despite this judicial ruling, the Edo State government has refused to comply, stating that it has filed an appeal against the decision.
On Monday, as rumours spread of Shaibu’s planned return to office, access to the Government House was heavily restricted.
Visitors and government employees found it difficult to enter the area, with many forced to park their vehicles far from the premises and walk long distances.
Security forces were seen cordoning off Osadebey Avenue, only allowing official security vehicles to pass freely.
One government employee, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed surprise at the heightened security, speculating that it was intended to block Shaibu from resuming his role as deputy governor.
