Mr Odion Jerry Igbineweka has been elected as the new Chairman of the GSM Village in Benin City following a closely contested poll. He emerged victorious with a total of 103 votes, defeating his closest rival, Mr Lucky Deji, who garnered 55 votes.
The announcement was made during a brief ceremony where Mr Igbineweka received his Certificate of Return from the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr Stanley Nweke Dede. In his acceptance speech, Mr Igbineweka pledged to lead with transparency, accountability and an open-door policy, while prioritising the welfare of all members of the association.
The new executive team also includes Gabriel Chidi as Secretary General, Endurance Itoya as Treasurer (unopposed), Francis Agbonifo as Financial Secretary (unopposed), Amadin David as Public Relations Officer, and Osemwengie Efosa as Provost.
Expressing gratitude to Edo State Governor, Mr Monday Okpebholo, and his deputy, Mr Dennis Idahosa, Mr Igbineweka commended the administration for creating a conducive environment for businesses at the GSM Village to thrive. He noted that safety and security are essential for business sustainability and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to contributing to the state’s development through regular tax payments.
He also assured members that issues concerning power supply, particularly relating to the Ossiomo electricity service, would be addressed promptly in the interest of all stakeholders.
Flanked by members of his executive team, Mr Igbineweka called on aggrieved members of the association to embrace unity and adhere to the rules guiding the organisation. He encouraged those who were unable to meet eligibility requirements in this election cycle to prepare for future opportunities.
Mr Lucky Deji, the immediate past Vice Chairman of the association, expressed confidence in Mr Igbineweka’s leadership, describing him as trustworthy and capable of transforming the GSM Village. He pledged his support to ensure the new chairman’s success.
Meanwhile, Electoral Committee Chairman Mr Stanley Nweke Dede described the election as free, fair and credible. He urged the newly elected chairman to be magnanimous in victory and to remember that leadership is a call to service, not domination.
The peaceful conclusion of the elections and the broad support for Mr Igbineweka’s leadership signal a new chapter for the GSM Village as it seeks to consolidate unity and growth within the business community.
