In a bid to enhance the relationship between the police and the public, the Ogun State Police Command has launched a new initiative designed to foster open dialogue and increase cooperation in tackling local security challenges. Dubbed the “Community Engagement Initiative,” the programme aims to provide a platform for citizens to meet directly with police officers, discuss concerns, and offer input on how to improve policing efforts for a safer environment.
On Thursday, February 6, 2025, the State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, led the initiative by engaging with members of various communities across Abeokuta. His outreach covered areas such as Panseke, NNPC, Sapon, Iyana Mortuary, Computer Market, and Lafenwa Market, where he interacted with traders, artisans, market women, union members, and residents.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Omolola Odutola, the initiative allowed locals to express their concerns about pressing issues like ritual killings, land grabbing, drug abuse, cultism, and vandalism by scavengers. CP Ogunlowo reassured the public that the police would intensify efforts to address these issues, highlighting the force’s commitment to professionalism, fairness, and the rule of law.
A key point of discussion during the engagement was the issue of police profiling, particularly among young people. CP Ogunlowo acknowledged the grievances and assured that the Ogun State Police Command would take immediate steps to improve its interactions with the public while maintaining high security standards.
The Commissioner further directed all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the State to fully integrate the programme into their operations, urging them to adopt a more community-centred approach. He stressed that this initiative would not only promote better communication and collaboration between the police and residents but also work towards breaking down stereotypes and building trust.
“The Ogun State Police Command is committed to safeguarding lives and property while fostering an atmosphere of respect and mutual cooperation with all residents,” the statement concluded. Citizens were also encouraged to engage proactively with the police, share valuable information, and support law enforcement efforts in maintaining a secure and peaceful community.
This initiative represents a significant step towards improving police-community relations and ensuring that the public has a direct role in shaping the safety of their environment.
