The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has submitted the official results of the disputed Edo State governorship election to the Election Petition Tribunal. The results, which were part of a batch of key documents, were presented during a session of the tribunal in Abuja on Wednesday.
Abdullahi Aliyu (SAN), representing INEC, submitted the election results as well as a certified true copy of the declaration document. He also presented a copy of INEC’s 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for the conduct of elections.
Adetunji Oyeyipo (SAN), representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate Asue Ighodalo—who are challenging the election outcome—stated that they had no objections to the admission of the documents. He added that his clients had already filed similar documents to support their case.
Lawyers for the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) for the APC candidate and now governor, Monday Okpebholo, and Emmanuel Ukala (SAN), also indicated no objections to the documents’ admissibility.
Tribunal chairman, Justice Wilfred Kpochi, confirmed the documents were officially entered into evidence.
Aliyu also announced that INEC would begin calling its witnesses on Thursday, with plans to complete their testimonies within five days, much shorter than the 10-day period initially allotted. Most of INEC’s witnesses are expected to travel from Benin City, Edo State, to provide testimony before the panel.
