The Edo State Government has set up a Special Committee to address the growing controversy surrounding the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), following a series of protests and petitions from the Benin Royal Palace, traditional institutions, and concerned citizens.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., the government said the move was in recognition of the Benin Royal Palace as the rightful custodian of the kingdom’s cultural heritage and artefacts.
The committee, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has been tasked with engaging international donors, partners, and trustees of MOWAA to determine the museum’s legal and operational status and clarify the role and rights of the Benin Royal Palace in the project.
Other members of the committee include General Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd.) as Vice Chairman, H.E. Lucky Imasuen, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Roland Itoyah Otaru (SAN), and Barrister Iryn Omorogiuwa, who will serve as Secretary.
The government directed the committee to begin work immediately and submit its findings and recommendations within the shortest possible time.
According to the statement, the Edo State Government remains committed to protecting and promoting the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom while ensuring transparency, accountability, and mutual respect in all heritage-related partnerships.
The development comes amid rising public interest and debate over the ownership, governance, and management of MOWAA, which has faced criticism from traditional authorities and cultural stakeholders in recent months.
