Edo State Governor Okpebholo inaugurates Asset Verification Committee to Boost Transparency

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo in a bold move on Tuesday inaugurated a 14-member Asset Verification Committee.

The committee’s mandate is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the State’s assets and liabilities, marking a cornerstone of the Governor’s reform-driven administration.

Governor Okpebholo emphasised that the initiative aligns with his administration’s goal to build a government deeply rooted in accountability. “We are building a government rooted in accountability, and this committee will help provide clarity on what we own and owe as a state,” he declared during the inauguration ceremony.

The Governor clarified that the committee’s mission is not to engage in witch-hunting but to establish a clear understanding of the state’s assets. “Prior to my inauguration on November 12, 2024, I set up a Transition Committee led by Dr. Pius Odubu to gather essential information for a smooth handover of government. Based on their report, it has become imperative to set up this committee to verify the true status of Edo State’s assets,” Governor Okpebholo explained.

The Governor outlined the scope of the committee’s responsibilities, which include confirming the existence, condition, location, and ownership of all assets, whether fixed or movable, tangible or intangible. “This verification process is vital to updating our records and ensuring accountability for the state’s resources,” he added.

Appointed to lead the committee is Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, a former Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. Dr. Umakhihe, known for his extensive experience in public administration and meticulous approach, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by the Governor and the people of Edo State.

“We will be meticulous, accurate, and timely in delivering on this important assignment. Our goal is to exceed expectations and provide the clarity needed for the effective management of Edo State’s resources,” Dr. Umakhihe stated.

Governor Okpebholo expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver exceptional results under Dr. Umakhihe’s leadership. The Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to adopting global best practices in governance and urged the committee to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and dedication.
