In moments of public frustration, it is easy to blame government for every failure around us. But as responsible citizens, we must rise above sentiment and examine the facts before reaching conclusions.
The ongoing collapse of the Ossiomo power supply has sparked heated conversations, with some attempting to pin the blame on the administration of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo. However, my findings reveal that the reality is quite different.
The present shutdown is the result of internal disputes between Ossiomo Power and its foreign technical partners, coupled with unresolved operational and technical failures within the facility. Importantly, the Edo State Government was not carried along in the decision to shut down operations.
This is also not the first time Ossiomo Light has collapsed. Under the previous administration, Ossiomo experienced repeated shutdowns due to disagreements with partners, technical malfunctions, and financial sustainability issues. Citizens bore the brunt then, just as we do now. Clearly, the challenge is structural and corporate, not political.
It would therefore be unfair — even dishonest — to heap the current burden on Governor Okpebholo. On the contrary, the governor has tasked the Edo State Electrification Agency to intervene and protect the interests of consumers while pursuing a sustainable solution. This is the kind of leadership we should encourage, not undermine with misinformation.
The lesson is simple: Edo’s challenges require truth, unity, and constructive engagement. Ossiomo’s recurring collapse is not new, but with the right reforms and consistent support, the present administration can push for a more reliable power framework.
Let us be guided by facts. Blame may be easy, but truth builds progress.
