The Ọ̀sun State Government has declared Thursdays as Environmental Sanitation Day, with the immediate commencement of a compulsory two-hour weekly sanitation exercise across the state.
The directive was approved by Governor Ademola Adeleke and announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the State Head of Service and Chairman of the newly constituted Ọ̀sun State Environmental Sanitation Taskforce, Mr Ayanleye Samuel Aina.
Under the new arrangement, offices, market operators, shop owners, artisans, malls, stores and other business premises are required to participate physically in the exercise between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. every Thursday.
The statement noted that law enforcement agents would be deployed to ensure compliance with the directive, stressing that their role would be to enforce participation rather than arrest defaulters.
According to the State Government, the exercise is aimed at curbing indiscriminate refuse disposal, preventing violations of environmental regulations, reducing the risk of disease outbreaks and promoting cleanliness across the state.
Aina urged residents and business operators to cooperate with the government and actively participate in the weekly exercise.
