Tension has gripped Lagos Island after a top official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsudeen Adio, popularly known as Shamelon, was arrested for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, 17 September, along Tapa Street, Lagos Island, when Adio reportedly descended on the rider for “obstructing his way” in traffic. Eyewitnesses said the union strongman was joined by his associates in brutalising the victim until he collapsed. The rider later died from his injuries.

Adio, a well-known NURTW figure on Lagos Island, is said to have a history of violence. Residents alleged that he has repeatedly attacked commercial tricycle (Marwa) operators in the area, with reports linking him to another fatal beating earlier in the week which left one operator hospitalised before succumbing to his injuries.

The latest killing has sparked public outrage, with residents accusing the authorities of turning a blind eye to Adio’s reign of terror because of his alleged ties to Lagos NURTW leader, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.

“We don’t know who his next victim will be,” one resident lamented. “If the State government does not act decisively, more lives will be lost.”

Human rights advocates have called for a full investigation and prosecution, insisting that the matter must not be swept under the carpet.

As of press time, Lagos State Police Command confirmed Adio’s arrest but had yet to issue a formal statement on charges.
