The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to the perpetrators of the recent killings in Ovia South West Local Government Area, vowing that his administration will leave no stone unturned in bringing them to justice.
Governor Okpebholo made this commitment during an assessment visit to the affected communities, where he assured residents of his government’s resolve to restore security and prevent further bloodshed. The governor decried the violent attacks that occurred on 21 February, in which several communities were thrown into turmoil by criminal elements.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo and made available to Uptown Press NG condemned the violence and reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to peacebuilding and law enforcement. He declared that swift action was already underway to track down those responsible.
“These criminals invade your farms, steal your crops, and take lives in the process. This cannot continue. We will pursue them relentlessly and ensure justice is served. No one is above the law,” the governor stated.
To bolster security in the region, Okpebholo announced plans to establish a police outpost and enhance surveillance efforts. He also revealed that additional soldiers had been deployed alongside three new Operation Rescue patrol vehicles to strengthen security in the troubled communities.
Addressing the residents, the governor urged them to remain law-abiding and not resort to retaliation. “I understand your pain, but I implore you not to take the law into your own hands. We will ensure that you feel the presence of the government through security reinforcements and sustainable development initiatives,” he assured.
As part of his efforts to foster reconciliation, Governor Okpebholo also met with leaders from the neighbouring Gbelebe community, calling for unity and peaceful coexistence among all ethnic groups in the area.
“We cannot achieve development amid violence. My administration is committed to transforming these communities, providing roads, electricity, and economic opportunities,” he said.
Local leaders recounted that the violence erupted when hoodlums attempted to loot farm produce in Madoti’s farming settlements but were confronted by vigilantes. They appealed to the government to intensify security measures to protect farmers and prevent further attacks.
With the governor’s latest assurances, residents now await tangible action to curb the insecurity that has long plagued the community.
