The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has announced the extension of the deadline for the registration of Data Controllers and Data Processors of Major Importance (DCPMIs) to October 31, 2024.
This was revealed in a statement issued by Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal Enforcement & Regulation at the Commission.
According to the statement, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, emphasized that the extension is intended to ensure that data controllers and processors comply with the provisions of the 2024 Act governing the Commission.
The Act requires that DCPMIs only engage agents and contractors who are duly registered with the NDPC as of October 15, 2024, for the processing of personal data.
The NDPC urged all data controllers and processors of major importance to take immediate action to ensure that agents processing personal data on their behalf are registered in compliance with the law.
Failure to do so, the Commission warned, constitutes a violation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act and could lead to sanctions.
The deadline extension comes as part of NDPC’s commitment to promoting accountability in the handling of personal data in Nigeria, as well as ensuring that organizations adhere to the highest standards of data privacy and protection.
