The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has responded to recent allegations made by the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, concerning the Force’s involvement in the Rivers council elections.
The NPF stated that its actions are in full compliance with a subsisting Federal High Court order that restricts the police from participating in the elections.
In a statement issued on Friday, the NPF expressed concern over the accusations directed at Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and the Force, clarifying that the court order had been served on both the Nigeria Police Force and the Rivers State Government.
As a result, the NPF instructed the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State to adhere strictly to the judicial directive.
However, on October 3, 2024, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State received reports that officers from the Rivers State Government House had been deployed to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RIEC) office to provide security for the election.
This action appeared to contradict the court order barring police involvement in the electoral process.
Upon receiving the report, the IGP promptly authorised the Rivers State Commissioner of Police to withdraw the Government House officers and replace them with personnel from the Command Operations Department.
These officers were tasked with providing overnight security for the RIEC office to prevent any potential attacks on the facility.
The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in Rivers State, working in coordination with other security agencies to maintain peace and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
In light of the situation, the IGP has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel across Rivers State to bolster security efforts.
The police urged citizens of Rivers State to remain calm and continue their daily activities, assuring the public that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain peace in the state during this period.
