The Owan East Local Government Area (LGA) has witnessed the impeachment of its Chairman, Hon. (Prince) Aminu Akodo-Kadiri, and Deputy Chairman, Hon. Clement Ojebuovbo, following accusations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The impeachment, carried out by the legislative arm of the council, was spearheaded during a plenary session presided over by Hon. Haruna Mohammed. The session saw councillors from across the wards rallying behind the motion to remove the top officials from office.

Hon. Friday Henry Oisawemi of Ward Seven moved the motion, citing the leaders’ alleged violations of council regulations and acts deemed detrimental to the interests of both the council and the wider community. His motion was seconded by Hon. Marcus Sunday of Ward One, with support from eight councillors, ensuring the impeachment was carried out with a clear majority.

The dramatic ousting has also led to the removal of the legislative arm’s leader for failing to align with the majority’s stance. Reports suggest this reshuffle is set to reposition the council’s leadership, with the legislative leader temporarily stepping into the executive role.

This landmark decision has made Owan East LGA the first in the Edo North district to impeach its Chairman and deputy, signalling a decisive stand by the councillors against perceived leadership failures.

While the development has been hailed by some as a step towards greater accountability, others have called for further investigations into the allegations to ensure justice and transparency in governance.
