A leading figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has described the newly formed political coalition involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a project driven by selfish ambition, lacking both structure and credibility to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Speaking on Thursday during a Southwest Townhall Meeting of The Alternative Movement in Abeokuta, Showunmi, who also serves as the National Coordinator of the group, expressed strong reservations about the intentions and competence of the coalition’s leaders, including former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
“Just look at the kind of people parading themselves as a coalition. Every election season, it must always be about them. You cannot continue to disturb the country with your inordinate ambition,” Showunmi said.
He accused the coalition members of abandoning their original parties, only to infiltrate another platform with what he described as a “destructive attitude” that had previously fractured their former political homes.
“The ADC has been around for some time, and some of us know the history. Now they are storming the party like it had no members before them. Where is the evidence of their past achievements where they held power?” he asked.
Showunmi also referenced Nigeria’s long-standing power rotation arrangement, asserting that any attempt to alter the balance would be rejected by Nigerians.
“When power goes to the north for eight years, it returns to the south for another eight. We cannot have a Yoruba man do four years and then another Yoruba man attempts 12 years with the backing of others. That is not how this country works,” he said.
He added that while he remains critical of poor governance, he would not support efforts that destabilise the sitting administration, stating that Tinubu’s presidency had only reached the halfway mark.
“I criticise when I must, but I will not stand by and support a gang-up that hinders the president from governing in peace. We may not yet know who can defeat him in 2027, but we certainly know it won’t be this coalition,” he declared.
Showunmi also revealed plans to embark on a nationwide tour over the next three months, after which he would announce the political direction of The Alternative Movement.
Describing the movement as a platform for civic awakening, he urged Nigerians to shun voter apathy and resist vote buying, which he described as a plague against good governance.
Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, also present at the event, echoed Showunmi’s sentiments, branding the coalition leaders as “recycled failures.”
“The very people who brought this country to its knees now parade themselves as saviours. While Tinubu inherited a battered economy and fractured security infrastructure, these people are offering new prescriptions after poisoning the nation,” Arabambi said.
He stressed that The Alternative Movement is not against coalition politics, but it must be rooted in genuine progressive ideals and not championed by “those who have failed the nation before.”
“The nation cannot afford another round of deception. What is needed now is a new political culture that promotes competence, accountability and unity,” he concluded.
