The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Federal Government to reverse the recent increase in petrol prices, describing the move as a “brutal assault” on Nigerians.
In a statement on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP expressed concern over the impact of the hike, particularly on citizens already struggling with economic hardship.
The PDP criticized the President Bola Tinubu-led administration for increasing petrol prices without considering the well-being of the people. Ologunagba warned that the decision could lead to a crisis, as many Nigerians are already unable to cope with the current economic challenges.
According to the statement, the increase in fuel prices exacerbates the difficulties faced by Nigerians, who are enduring high inflation rates and widespread unemployment. The PDP claimed that under Tinubu’s leadership, 150 million Nigerians have fallen below the poverty line, while businesses continue to collapse.
“The thoughtless increase in fuel price, especially at this time, is a huge recipe for crisis, as Nigerians cannot bear its worsening effect on the suffocating economic hardship,” the statement read. Ologunagba added that the administration’s policies have made it difficult for Nigerians to afford basic necessities, including food, medication, and family support.
The PDP further criticized the government’s macro-economic policies, stating that major multinational companies are leaving the country due to unfavorable business conditions. The party also questioned what President Tinubu discusses with foreign leaders during his international trips, given the worsening situation in Nigeria.
In its statement, the PDP called on President Tinubu to reverse the petrol price hike and review other “suffocating” policies of the government.
The party emphasised that with proper management of resources and national refining capacity, petrol prices in the country should not exceed N250 per litre.
