Peter Obi, a member of the Labour Party (LP), has announced that he will not be celebrating his upcoming 62nd birthday and has appealed to his friends, party members, and supporters to refrain from joining him in celebration or presenting gifts.
Instead, he encourages them to extend their gestures of goodwill to those in need.
In a statement released on his verified Twitter account, the former Governor of Anambra State expressed his gratitude for God’s blessings but reiterated his long-standing decision not to celebrate his birthday in the current state of Nigeria.
Obi emphasized the need for sacrifices from all, including leaders and privileged individuals, in order to build a better Nigeria.
He highlighted the country’s prevailing challenges, such as insecurity, violence, and bloodshed, which necessitate reflection and contemplation.
Obi expressed his desire to celebrate in a Nigeria that works for all citizens, where they can take pride. He believes that this true cause for celebration will benefit all Nigerians.
While acknowledging the kind requests from his friends, party members, and the OBIdient Family and supporters to commemorate his birthday and present gifts, Obi humbly and respectfully appealed to them to redirect their generosity towards those in need, particularly during these difficult times.
He suggested visiting hospitals, orphanages, homes for the elderly, and facilities for people with disabilities, offering generous gifts and support. Additionally, he encouraged assistance to schools in remote areas by providing essential amenities.
Obi also mentioned the option of visiting various Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across the country for those who wish to do more.
He expressed his personal commitment to the cause, stating that he plans to allocate his time and resources to help the less fortunate. Furthermore, he aims to raise funds for schools, hospitals, and other essential institutions.
