The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to reverse what it described as the “illegal” hike in petrol prices.
SERAP argues that the increase, which pushed fuel prices to as high as N900 per litre, violates constitutional rights and international human rights obligations.
In a statement by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the group also urged Tinubu to probe allegations of corruption and mismanagement within NNPCL, particularly the alleged misuse of $300 million bailout funds and the $6 billion debt owed to suppliers.
SERAP warned that if these measures are not taken within 48 hours, they may pursue legal action against the government.
SERAP further condemned the price hike as a severe burden on already impoverished Nigerians, accusing the government of exacerbating poverty rather than addressing systemic corruption in the oil sector.
The group emphasized that the arbitrary increase disproportionately affects marginalized and vulnerable citizens, jeopardizing their right to a dignified life.
